Vedas Hashtag
The official student association of Vedas College — an Information Technology student network, organising everything from Sports Week to hackathons.
One association, everything it runs
Vedas Hashtag is the official student association of Vedas College — an Information Technology student network. Rather than a separate society for every interest, it is one body that organises the whole calendar of student activity — Sports Week and futsal on one side, hackathons, codeathons and ideathons on the other, with talks and workshops in between.
It is run by students, with faculty support. Members plan the events, set the rules, find the judges, manage the day itself and hand the association on to the next year — which is the part that tends to teach the most.
Every student on every programme is welcome, from first semester onward. There is no audition and no requirement to be good at any of it already.
Why join
Work that isn’t coursework
A hackathon project, a tournament you organised, a workshop you ran — concrete things to put in front of an employer that a transcript cannot show.
People outside your class
Events are deliberately cross-programme and cross-year, so BCA, BSc CSIT, BBM and BBS students end up on the same team — and seniors are the ones you learn the most from.
Running something real
Budgets, sponsors, schedules, rules, disputes on the day. Organising is a skill, and Hashtag is where students get to practise it.
What Hashtag organises
Some of it is annual and some of it runs through the term. Dates for each are announced on the notice board.
Sports Week
The association’s biggest fixture on the calendar — a week of inter-class competition across several games, with fixtures, scoring and a closing prize ceremony run by students.
Futsal tournament
Class and mixed-year teams drawn into a bracket and played out over a series of evenings. Open to every programme, and the tournament most students meet Hashtag through first.
Hackathon
Teams take a brief and build something working against the clock — usually over a weekend, ending in demos to a panel of faculty and people working in the industry.
Codeathon
A timed contest of problem solving rather than product building: rounds of programming problems, scored on correctness and speed, run individually or in small teams.
Ideathon
For the idea before the code exists. Teams take a problem worth solving, shape it into a proposal and pitch it — no implementation required, which makes it the one event open equally to IT and Management students.
Talks and workshops
Shorter sessions through the term: people from industry on what they actually do all day, alumni on the first job, and hands-on workshops on tools the syllabus does not have room for.
How to join in
Become a member
Tell the Hashtag team you want in, at the desk they set up at the start of each semester or by email. Membership is free and open to every programme and year.
Or just enter an event
You do not have to be a member to compete. Every Sports Week fixture, hackathon and ideathon takes entries from any student — watch the notice board for the registration date.
Help organise one
The more useful way in. Judging, refereeing, scoring, sponsorship, posters, photography — each event needs more hands than it has, whatever your programme.
Something you want to run?
If Hashtag does not organise it yet and you think it should, that is usually how a new event starts. Bring the idea.
